Evergreen Marine partners with X-Press Feeders to launch Europe’s first green methanol-powered feeder network

By Cecilia Joneback, February 6, 2024

Evergreen Marine Corporation, has signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with X-Press Feeders, the largest independent common carrier globally. This collaboration marks a significant step towards sustainability in the maritime industry by introducing Europe’s premier feeder network powered by green methanol.

X-Press Feeders is set to deploy its new dual fuel green methanol vessels within Europe, operating them on green methanol, an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional fuels. Evergreen, being one of X-Press Feeders’ prominent clients, underscores its commitment to a sustainable future by pledging its containers to these vessels.

The feeder network, a joint effort between Evergreen and X-Press Feeders, will start its operations initially from the Port of Rotterdam, extending its coverage to ports in the Baltic Sea and Scandinavia. The first green methanol vessels will deploy the feeder services between Finland and Baltic countries to Rotterdam and Antwerp and will be taken into service already in Q2 2024.

In total X-Press Feeders has 14 ships on order for delivery from 2024 Q2 through mid-2026 and they will all be operated within Europe and the Mediterranean.

The company has already signed a firm contract with Dutch fuel supplier OCI Global for the supply of green methanol, which is ISCC-EU (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification) certified. Also known as bio-methanol, the fuel is a renewable energy source produced from the decomposition of organic matter, such as waste and residues.

X-Press Feeders’ Chief Operating Officer, Francis Goh, emphasizes the urgency of action in combating climate change. He asserts that by accelerating the adoption of dual-fuel vessels, they are proactively working towards meeting emission reduction targets.

In their call for collective action, both Evergreen and X-Press Feeders encourage stakeholders across the shipping industry to join them in their journey towards a more sustainable shipping. This includes port operators, fuel suppliers, logistics companies, freight-forwarders, and beneficial cargo owners (BCOs).
